Introduction to LDS Sources

Online search facilities are available through the LDS Web Site. You can use the Family History Library Catalog to find out what resources are available through your local LDS Family History Center.

Many of these records have now been digitized and are available on the Family Search Website, although not all have been indexed.

Diana Hanson wrote the following description of LDS Family History Centers:

The LDS genealogical libraries are usually at the "stake" center. A stake is simply a little bit larger meeting house that services about 5-10 branches (small congregations)  and wards (larger congregations). There might be three stakes in a state (somewhere like Iowa!) or as many as a hundred in a city, like L.A., depending on the LDS population.

Most libraries are well manned by volunteers who usually have some knowledge about genealogy. There are larger libraries near the temples (such as Chicago and Phoenix) who are manned by full-time genealogy missionaries. Some have many books on local  genealogy which have been donated, others have very few. What they ALL have is a microfilm index of what's available at the main library in Salt Lake City which is absolutely huge! The genealogical society in Salt Lake used to be in a four story wing of a 26 floor skyscraper in the Church offices. Main floor was US, 2nd was admin, 3rd Great Britain and Europe, 4th was Misc and Archives. Now it has it's own building  down the street and is twice the size! The church now has over 50% of the worlds  microfilmed, in about 140 countries and is continually adding more by sending out  volunteer genealogy missionaries on a full-time mission and extractors in local  churches who do it a few hours a week.

The libraries also have a microfiche index of temple work that's been done in the LDS  temples. That means that members of the church have submitted their own genealogy,  and records that have been microfilmed and extracted by volunteers have been  indexed and submitted for baptisms, and sealings in the temple. Some people get  upset about that, making their ancestors "Mormons", but they shouldn't. My grandfather  (who was Church of England) always said if it was true, then it should be done, if it wasn't? It didn't matter, so why fight about it? Regardless, the information is there to  use, so take advantage of it.

Regardless, the microfiche of the submitted work is invaluable because you often find  people who are your ancestors and the people who submitted them, who often have  more on your own line. [NOTE from Judy Boxler: You may want to validate the research using original sources.] Plus, many, many New England township records  have been extracted as well as countless parish registers throughout England, Ireland,  Scotland, Wales, and Europe.

I would do this:

  • Check out the microfiche and see what's been submitted on your own family  surnames. You can have copies made of the group sheets and pedigree charts which  list the submitting person.
  • Check out the SLC index and see what records are available in the area you're  interested in.
  • Order what films you'd like to see (they're relatively inexpensive - $3.50 a roll, last I knew?)

The LDS genealogy libraries are used by more non-member people than members and I've often seen priests and nuns in the genealogy library in Salt Lake! The volunteers are marvelous and will help you answer the silliest questions. They even have printed  guides to help you get organized, locate records and figure out how to do research at  minimal cost. They also have a list of qualified researchers if you feel you need professional help. They sometimes have strange hours, so call first! Good luck!
